Welcome to the Legal Officers Section!
Thank you for your interest in IACP's Legal Officers Section. The greatest benefit of becoming a member of the LOS is your entry into the network of attorneys who specialize in police-related advice and litigation. The LOS is made up of municipal attorneys, prosecutors, and private attorneys who concentrate in police legal issues concerning criminal, employment, legislative, and civil liability matters. The resources available through this network are particularly valuable when you find yourself with a specific problem that needs a particular expertise. In addition, you will have an opportunity to participate in professional activities that advance the professional development of law enforcement legal advisors from around the country.Benefits
- The Police Chief magazine is published monthly and included in your membership fees. In addition to providing information on the latest law enforcement practices and technology, the LOS contributes a monthly column, "Chief's Counsel," to specifically address emerging legal trends in police management.
- A e-mail list where you can communicate directly with other LOS members on matters of legislation, employment law, policy and procedure, litigation and constitutional issues. At the conference, the LOS offers two full days of seminars updating the members on police-related legal issues and current hot topics. Past presentations have included racial profiling, case law updates on civil rights and employment law matters, workshops on use of force and less-than-lethal force options, and a briefing book from the legislative committee.
- Access to the Model Statutes Project, produced by members of the LOS.
- High-quality training on current issues in police management at substantially reduced rates.
- Access to IACP Model Policies addressing critical issues in law enforcement, including pursuits and use of force.
- Access to immediate information from other police professionals through a premium service. IACPNet is a password-protected electronic communication network where users may research and post or respond to messages left by other users to share information on policies, equipment, training, and other relevant management issues.
